SURfaPLUS shares research with growers on IPM

What are the benefits of adjuvants? SURfaPLUS informs visitors of IPM Essen firsthand about research results in bulb flowers, cut flowers, pot plants and woody ornamentals. 26, 27, 28 and 29 January you are welcome in our stand (Hall 7.0 Booth 7A08) and we will answer your questions about adjuvants and their application. In this SURfaPLUS - Tips & Tricks issue a preview on recently finished experiments.

Research and development
SURfaPLUS is an innovative company in Wageningen (The Netherlands) specialized in adjuvants for a more effective plant protection and plant growth regulation. SURfaPLUS develops adjuvants and applications of adjuvants in collaboration with the producers of adjuvants.

Adjuvant increases efficacy of Mogeton against liverwort
The crop-safe adjuvant Hasten significantly increases the efficacy of the herbicide Mogeton (quinoclamine) on liverwort and other difficult-to-control mosses. The independent agricultural consultancy provider DLV Plant (now Delphy) has found this in a study with the woody ornamentals Photinia x fraseri 'Red Robin' and Prunus lusitanica in pot. Under optimum moss control conditions, addition of Hasten to the Mogeton spray solution makes it possible to halve the recommended dose of this expensive herbicide.

Adjuvants reduce costs of growth regulation
Growers of pot plants and bedding plants can save on the costs of growth regulators by adding the adjuvant Elasto G5 to the spray solution. Growth regulator costs can be reduced by at least forty percent, according to studies by the independent agricultural consultancy provider DLV Plant (now Delphy) with a range of ornamental plant species and cultivars. In these experiments, DLV Plant successfully reduced or even halved the dose of the growth regulator and added the adjuvant Elasto G5 to the spray solution.

Elasto G5 and Atplus enhance the foliar uptake of active ingredients and improved the wetting of difficult-to-wet crops.
Atplus is used with daminozide in chrysanthemum and Pernettya.
Elasto G5 is used in other ornamentals as Atplus is often too hard in these ornamentals.
Elasto G5 is used with daminozide in hydrangea, kalanchoe, petunia, sutera, campanula, platycodon, sunflower, Viola cornuta, potted chrysanthemum, Dahlia, Dahlietta, Solanum rantonettii, lavender and pelargonium.
Elasto G5 can also be used with chlormequat in poinsettia in order to reduce the number of applications.
Elasto G also improves the performance of mepanipyrim against powdery mildew.

Adjuvants reduce costs: calculation example
Calculation example of breakdown of costs of adjuvant Elasto G5 with daminozide for growth regulation in ornamentals (prices are subject to changes).

daminozide (g/l) reduction per
1000 m2 (€)
reduction (%)
2 11 39
4 25 44
6 39 46

Conclusion: Even when one takes into account the costs of the adjuvant a substantial reduction of costs is possible.
